The Forests’ Imaginary Trial (2023–2030)

It is an eight-year performance-research that explores how performing arts can function as a space for ecological justice.

The project transforms theatre into a fictional courtroom, where performances and Assemblies invite audiences to participate as jury in defense of Nature and in reflecting on responsibility, and the relationship between humans and the more-than-human world. Through choreography, dance, text, sound, and collective practices, the work denounces ecocide, disseminates the Rights of Nature, and proposes artistic frameworks in which new forms of “intimate-ecological law” can be imagined and experienced through an artistic proposal.

The project emerges from an urgency: our existing political and legal systems have proven insufficient in addressing ongoing environmental destruction. The work proposes and develops artistic formats that engage the senses, emotions, and practices of collective imagination, as a way to propose artistic solution for healing our relationship with Nature, and approach complex ecological questions differently. It is an attempt to create spaces where art meets other forms of knowledge, and attention, engaging with practices of reciprocity, care and responsibility.

Each year of The Forests’ Imaginary Trial consists of a new performance, including a performative Assembly, a publication or booklet.
